How Presentation Skills Training Can Help You Overcome the Fear of Presenting

A number of years ago there was a list taken from the book of lists that stated that Presentation skills and speaking to a large audience was the number 1 fear people had.

In fact 41% of people rated it as their biggest fear.

The strange thing about the list was that only 19% of people said death was their biggest fear. It is amazing to think that standing up and delivering a presentation to a group of people rated a higher fear than death.

The good news is that through presentation skills training you can alleviate that fear. Of course it’s true to say that you may still be anxious and get butterflies in your stomach before the presentation, but through good presentation skills training at least you will be able to make the butterflies fly in the same formation.

So how can presentation skills training help you? Well obviously every good presentation skills training programme will have a section dedicated to anxiety and nerves and offer specific techniques to help you deal with this. But there is more to it than that, the more confidence you have in your presentation style, notes, visual aids, structure of the presentation, knowledge of the audience, knowledge of the topic and knowledge of what you are trying to achieve, the more at ease you will feel.

Most presentation skills training programmes also allow time to deliver the presentations in a safe environment and receive feedback from a qualified instructor, this allows you to work on areas that need to be worked on, and many presentation skills training programmes allow time for the instructor to work through these areas with you. The more confidence you have in the presentation and your own presentation skills and delivery the less fear you will have.

There is no substitute for practice and I am always reminded of the famous golfer (I believe it was Gary Player) who had just chipped in the ball from the edge of the green.

I believe he was interviewed after the game and the commentator said ‘You must have been thrilled with the luck you had on that final shot’ the golfer replied ‘yes I was, but it’s funny the more I practice that shot, the luckier I get with it’

I believe there is a lesson for us all to learn whether you are playing golf or using your presentation skills to address an audience, the more you practice the luckier you will get and the luckier you get the less anxious you will be

We can not help the 19% of people who have a fear of death, but through presentation skills training carried out by an instructor who is a master in the art of presentation skills you can definitely overcome the fear of making presentations.

Also do endurance sets to build up your lung/endurance capacity becasue you will need it.

Kicking Drills
1. Body Dolphin: kick with hands at side, breathe on upbeat of every fourth kick—drop head down on down beat with out hesitating. Keep rhythm consistent, especially while breathing.
2. Body Dolphin: same as above except that the hands are in front.
3. Underwater kick: kick in a streamline position underwater—on stomach, back, or side.
4. Kick on back: dolphin kick on your back with hands at your side or in front, keeping knees below the surface of the water.

Press The Corners
Kick Butterfly while doing a small scull extending beyond the shoulders, and back in again. Keep sculling strokes to less than 12-inches of travel. Purpose: working the catch phase of Butterfly.

Scooter Butterfly
Hold kickboard with one arm, kick Butterfly, and stroke with the other arm. Keep eyes forward. Work timing and overall stroke. Purpose: undulation, thrust, and timing.

Two-up-Four Down
Do two strokes Butterfly, breathe, and dive forward underwater into a streamlined position and do four kicks. Purpose: entry, dolphin action, and breath control.

Butterfly/Breaststroke Combo
Swim two strokes Butterfly, then two strokes Breaststroke. Try to keep a consistent rhythm and undulating motion between the two strokes. Purpose: to learn rhythm and the undulating motion for both strokes.

Single Arm Fly Drills

This drill traditionally has been performed with one arm extended and one arm stroking. Focus on the kick timing of "kick your hands into the water" and "kick your hands out of the water". Accelerate the pull, and snap the hands through the finish and into the recovery. For the recovery portion of the stroke, you can do one of three drill options:

Thumb-Tip Drag: Bend your elbow and keep it high. WIth your palm facing behind you towards your feet, stick your thumb down and draft is along the surface of the water. This drill helps keep your hands and elbows in the proper position at the hand entry.

Super-Dolphin: Over-emphasize the "dolphining" undulation of the stroke. During the recovery, reach up straight to the sky with your arm, and look up at your hand, Drive your upper body upwards as high as possible, and then dive forward as your hand enters out front, driving your hips upward. Feel the rhythm of the arms with the kick.

Standard Recovery: Keep the elbows slightly bent, and sweep the hands low over the water during the recovery. Drive your head more forward than upward, and breathe facing forward. Practicing this drill simulates the stroke without tiring the swimmer as quickly.

An alternate way of swimming the single arm fly drill is to leave the nonworking arm at your side. This drill works on connecting the finish of the butterfly stroke with the recovery. You will have the feeling of "throwing your arm away." Always concentrate on "getting in front" for an effortless butterfly stroke.

Three-Kick / One-Pull

Extend the arms out in front in streamline position and take three full kicks. After the third kick, take one strong pull in time with the kicking. Recover the arms to the streamline position and repeat.
