Learn basic "open chords." These are chords like open C, G, A, and D. Once you learn how to master a small selection of basic chords you will be able to kick out a reasonable rendition of countless numbers of tunes. Become skilled at as many different ways to play a chord as you can. The more flexibility you have in shifting from one chord to another.

how to strengthen my weak hand for drumming?
I just started learning to play the drums (all i have is a set of sticks, practice pad and i use an online metronome). My left hand and fingers are a lot weaker than my right and i was wondering if one of those gripmaster things would help me, any suggestions??
Eh, it's not really about your grip strength. To be honest, you want your hands to be relaxed when you play. To strengthen my weak hand I did a couple things.
First, just play more with your left hand. Play 16 hits on left, then 8 hits on your right. Until they feel close to the same, then play the same with both 16/16. And so. You want to concentrate "how" you hit with your left hand. Watch your right and mimic it with your left.
Second, lead with your left hand. LRLRLRLR... LLRRLLRR...I know it seems like the same thing as right hand leading, but you put more tension on your lead hand. It's something like 15% more tension which creates more control. If you want you can get a book like Stick Control by Stone. At first, it seems like the dullest drum book in existence. But after you use those exercises for warm-ups and with a metronome your hands will be gold. Good Luck.
