What muscles are used in a Muay Thai/kickboxing Knee Strike? How can I increase the power in my Knee Strikes?
Hi, I would like to increase the power in my knee strikes, any other advice besides just kneeing the bag? Interested in what kind of training should i do to increase my power without taking away from the speed of my strikes? (I've heard that using really heavy weights will slow you down).
The principal muscles used in a knee strike from a clinch are the quadriceps muscles and the core and ab muscles. Increase power in your knee strikes by (1) strength training and (2) increasing glute-hamstring flexibility. Both are very important for powerful knee strikes. There are many approaches to increasing leg strength, from body weight-based training regimens (such as P90x) to weight training (full squats, dead lifts, weighted lunges). If weight training, aim for 3 or 4 sets of 10 to 12 reps. Unless you are doing serious power-lifting training (3 to 6 sets of 5 or fewer reps with 85-95% of single rep max weight) you shouldn't lose any speed. On the other hand, if you increase your body weight by say 10% with lean muscle you may lose speed if you don't maintain flexibility. Do plenty of core/ab exercises. Make regular stretching a serious part of your training, maybe try yoga to improve flexibility.
